1961 - After several delays on the launch pad, some of them planned, Alan Shepard became the first American in "space", taking a 15 minute suborbital ride aboard the Mercury spacecraft Freedom 7. He flew to an altitude of 116 statute miles  and to a landing point 302 statute miles down the Atlantic Missile Range.
