2008 – China launches the spacecraft Shenzhou 7 the third human space flight for the nation. The mission included an EVA carried out by crewmembers Zhai Zhigang and Liu Boming.

1998 - Galileo spacecraft completed a close-up flyby of Europa at 8:54 p.m. PDT, Galileo skimmed over the icy moon at an altitude of only 2,226 miles.

1992 - Launch of Mars Observer spacecraft, a NASA project  to study the atmosphere and surface of Mars. Contact was lost with the spacecraft on August 21, 1993 just before orbit insertion.

1644 - Birthday, Ole Rømer, Danish Astronomer who made the first measurements of the speed of light.
