2002 - Launch of STS 112 Atlantis to the International Space Station to assemble the S1 Truss segment.

1959 - The television system aboard Luna 3 obtained a series of 29 photographs over 40 minutes, covering 70% of the surface of themoon. These pictures developed on-board the spacecraft. The photographs were scanned and 17 were radio transmitted to ground stations in facsimile form on October 18, 1959.

1885 - Niels Bohr's birthday, Danish pioneer atomic physicist. He received the first U.S. Atoms for Peace Award in 1957.
