1973 - Mariner 10 (USA) launched. Venus and Mercury flyby mission it arrived at Venus on February 5, 1974, closet approach was 5700 km. Images of Venusian cloud tops were returned. 

1957 - First Earth life,  and death, in space: the dog Laika is launched aboard the USSR's Sputnik 2 and after a week dies in orbit.
