1996 - Mars Global Surveyor (USA) launched on a McDonnel Douglas Delta II. On September 11, 1997 the orbiter arrived and began aerobraking procedures, but during one orbital pass a solar array was damaged forcing a replan of the aerobraking. This spacecraft was a replacement for the lost Mars Observer.

1492 - The Ensisheim meteorite, the oldest meteorite with a known date of impact, strikes the earth around noon in a wheat field outside the village of Ensisheim, Alsace, France.
