1999 - Earth-Based Observations of an erupting volcano on Io, a moon of Jupiter,  This false-color infrared image was taken at the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility at Mauna Kea, Hawaii.

1940 - Birthday, Reinhard Furrer, physicist and astronaut, he flew as a payload specialist on the crew of STS-61A, Challenger, October 30 to November 6, 1985.  On September 9, 1995 he was killed while flying in an airshow crash.

1915 Albert Einstein presents the field equations of general relativity to the Prussian Academy of Sciences.
