1974 - Salyut 4, the third Soviet space station launched. Similar to Salyut 1, with the addition of three rotatable solar arrays. Designed to remain in orbit for  60 days devoted primarily to civilian objectives. It carried an X-ray instrument, called the Filin telescope.

1780 - Mary Fairfax Somerville born. She was a Scottish science writer and polymath, who studied mathematics and astronomy, and was nominated to be jointly the first female member of the Royal Astronomical Society at the same time as Caroline Herschel.

1573 - Death of Simon Marius, German astronomer who claimed to have discovered Jupiter's moons days before Galileo Galilei.
